This 6-day specialized birding circuit delves into the tranquil and bio-diverse mid-to-high altitude forests of West Sikkim. Starting from the plains of Bagdogra/NJP, you ascend to the scenic hamlet of Burmiok, a hotspot for lower-altitude Himalayan species. The journey then takes you higher into the serene village of Okhrey, serving as the base camp for the Hilley-Varsey birding trail. Spend dedicated days tracking high-altitude avian rarities through the dense pine, oak, and rhododendron forests of the Varsey Sanctuary, culminating in a scenic return to the plains with a memory card full of incredible wildlife photographs.

Day 1: Arrival at NJP/Bagdogra & Drive to Burmiokclose

Arrive at Bagdogra Airport or New Jalpaiguri Railway Station (NJP), where an Outlander representative warmly welcomes you. Embark on a highly scenic 4 to 5-hour drive winding up alongside the Teesta and Rangeet rivers into West Sikkim. Arrive at the peaceful, offbeat hamlet of Hee Bermiok (Burmiok) and check into your premium eco-resort. Spend the late afternoon enjoying introductory birding around the lodge gardens, spotting Oriental Turtle Doves, Blue Whistling Thrushes, and Himalayan Bulbuls as the sun sets over the Kanchenjunga range.

Day 2: Burmiok Bird Photography & Drive to Okhreyclose

Wake up before dawn for a dedicated morning birding session along the tranquil forest trails of Burmiok. This altitude is perfect for capturing a rich diversity of species. Return to the resort for breakfast, check out, and drive higher into the mountains towards Okhrey (approx. 9,000 ft). Arrive in the charming village of Okhrey, largely inhabited by the Sherpa community, and check into your premium mountain lodge. Spend the afternoon birding around the local monastery grounds.

Day 3: Okhrey to Hilley & Trek to Versay (Varsey)close

After an early breakfast, take a short drive to Hilley, the entry point for the Varsey Rhododendron Sanctuary. From here, embark on a gentle 4-kilometer birding trek through a magnificent, moss-draped forest of pine, oak, and blooming rhododendrons. This trail is an absolute paradise for birders. Keep your lenses ready and move quietly to spot the Fire-tailed Myzornis, Rufous-vented Yuhina, and Spotted Laughingthrush. Arrive at Versay top by the afternoon and check into the Guras Kunj trekker's hut. Enjoy a rustic evening surrounded by pristine wilderness and towering Himalayan peaks.

Day 4: Full Day Birding at Versay Rhododendron Sanctuaryclose

Tracking the Satyr Tragopan and Blood Pheasant

Wake up to panoramic views of Mt. Kangchenjunga and dedicate the entire day to exploring the deep trails of the Versay Sanctuary. Walk through the dense canopy to capture high-altitude avian beauties. Key targets today are the elusive ground-dwelling pheasants: the incredibly vibrant Satyr Tragopan and the Blood Pheasant. You will also scan the bamboo thickets for the Fulvous Parrotbill, Gold-naped Finch, and Blue-fronted Redstart. Return to your hut or camp for a well-deserved rest after a full day of focused photography.

Day 5: Versay to Okhrey via Hilleyclose

Take advantage of the early morning bird activity in Versay for any missed target species or to capture the stunning sunrise over the Himalayas. After breakfast, begin your trek back down to Hilley, birding along the downward trail which often yields different sightings as the day warms up. Meet your vehicle at Hilley and drive back down to Okhrey. Check back into your premium lodge and spend a relaxed evening reviewing your photographs and enjoying a farewell bonfire with your guide.

Day 6: Okhrey to NJP/Bagdogra Departureclose

Transfer Travel

Enjoy a final early morning birding session around Okhrey. After breakfast, check out and begin your descent from the high-altitude forests back down to the plains of North Bengal. Our driver will ensure a comfortable and timely transfer to Bagdogra Airport (IXB) or New Jalpaiguri Railway Station (NJP) for your onward journey, leaving you with an incredible portfolio of Himalayan bird photographs and memories.

Essential trip

information!

Pack a highly functional wardrobe designed for birding and alpine climates: neutral, earth-toned clothing (olive green, brown, grey) is strictly recommended to blend into the forest environment and avoid startling the birds. Bring heavy thermal inners, fleece jackets, and windproof outer shells for Okhrey and Varsey, where temperatures can drop significantly, especially in the early mornings. Sturdy, waterproof hiking shoes with deep traction are essential for the 4km Hilley-Varsey trail. Bring extra camera batteries and power banks (electricity is limited in Varsey), large-capacity memory cards, lens cleaning kits, and silica gel packets to protect gear from moisture. The local currency is the Indian Rupee (INR); carrying ample cash is critical, as ATMs and digital payment networks are completely non-functional in Okhrey and Varsey.
