Begin in the princely state of Kanker before descending into Jagdalpur to witness the magnificent Chitrakote Falls and interact with the Bison Horn Maria tribe. Cross into the Koraput valley of Odisha to respectfully observe the vibrant weekly markets of the Bonda, Gadaba, Paraja, and Dongria Kondh tribes. Itinerary

This epic 15-day overland journey is carefully structured to traverse the distinct indigenous belts of central and eastern India. Starting from Raipur, you venture into the Bastar region, exploring its thundering waterfalls, ancient caves, and unique Dhokra metal crafts. The route then crosses into the Eastern Ghats of Odisha, serving as your base for exploring the weekly haats (markets) of isolated tribal groups. After days of rich cultural immersion in Jeypore and Rayagada, the itinerary transitions south into the scenic, mist-covered Araku Valley in Andhra Pradesh, finally descending to the coastal city of Visakhapatnam for a historical and relaxing finale by the sea.

Entering the princely state

Arrive at Swami Vivekananda Airport (RPR) or Raipur Railway Station, where an Outlander representative warmly welcomes you. Embark on a scenic 3-hour drive southwards towards the Bastar region. Arrive in the historical town of Kanker and check into the magnificent Kanker Palace Heritage. Spend a relaxed evening interacting with the royal family (subject to availability) and enjoying a traditional dinner while learning about the history of the region and its indigenous inhabitants.
The heart of Bastar and Dhokra art

After a royal breakfast, drive towards Jagdalpur, the headquarters of the Bastar district. En route, make a significant stop at Kondagaon, widely renowned as the craft capital of Chhattisgarh. Visit the artisan workshops to observe the intricate process of Dhokra (bell metal) casting, an ancient wax-casting technique, as well as terracotta and wrought iron crafts. Continue your drive through the dense, sal-forested Keshkal Ghats. Arrive in Jagdalpur by late afternoon and check into your premium hotel.

Dedicate the morning to witnessing the breathtaking Chitrakote Falls, where the Indravati River plunges dramatically over a wide, horseshoe-shaped cliff, earning it the title of the "Niagara of India." Wake up early to visit the fascinating Onukadelli weekly market (ideally timed for Thursday). This remote market is frequented by the Bonda (Bondo) tribe, known as one of the most isolated groups in the region. The Bonda women are easily recognizable by their heavy brass neck rings, thick beaded necklaces, and minimal traditional attire. The market is also visited by the colorful Gadaba tribe. Pack a highly versatile and respectful wardrobe designed for cultural sensitivity and varied climates: modest, lightweight cotton clothing covering shoulders and knees is strictly recommended to show respect when visiting tribal markets and villages. Bring a warm sweater or light jacket, as the hilly regions of Koraput and Araku Valley can become quite chilly in the evenings and early mornings. Sturdy, comfortable walking shoes with good grip are essential for navigating the uneven, crowded terrain of the rural weekly haats and the slippery steps inside Kutumsar and Borra Caves. Bring essential sun protection, strong mosquito/insect repellent (critical for the forested tribal belts), a basic first-aid kit, and personal medications (including motion sickness tablets for the ghat roads). The local currency is the Indian Rupee (INR); carrying a significant amount of cash in small denominations is absolutely critical for buying local handicrafts or tipping, as digital payments are non-existent in these remote tribal areas.
