This is another new trip plan but slightly different from Assam-Meghalaya tour. Packed with Jungle safari and some real unknown exotic places in Meghalaya. Famously known as the Scotland of East, Shillong is not merely the Capital of Meghalaya but also the Rock Capital of India. An abode of tranquil and serene valleys, waterfalls, parks, caves, and awe-inspiring landscapes, it also grooves to the loudest and most happening musical festivals in the nation.

Itinerary

Description: This 8-day expedition captures the wild, unexplored essence of Meghalaya and Assam. Starting from the airport or railway station, you bypass the crowded cities and head straight to the remote whistling village of Kongthong. The route weaves through the adventure hubs of Shnongpdeng and Mawlyngbna, showcasing living root bridges, natural pools, and dramatic canyons. After a brief transition through Shillong, the tour descends into the Assamese plains to explore the dense rhino habitats of Pobitora and the mystical, history-laden village of Mayong, culminating at the tranquil tectonic waterbody of Chandubi Lake before your departure.

Day 1: Arrival & Drive to Kongthongclose

The Whistling Village of Meghalaya

Arrive at Shillong Airport (Umroi) or the nearest major railway station, where an Outlander representative will warmly welcome you. Embark on a highly scenic drive through the East Khasi Hills, leaving the main highways for winding rural roads. Arrive at Kongthong, a beautifully isolated village famous for its unique tradition called 'Jingrwai Iawbei', where every individual is assigned a unique melodic tune instead of a spoken name. Check into your cozy village homestay, interact with the locals, and listen to the hauntingly beautiful whistling echoing across the valleys at dusk.

Day 2: Krang Suri to Shnongpdengclose

After breakfast, bid farewell to your musical hosts and drive towards the Jaintia Hills. Stop at the spectacular Krang Suri Falls, a mesmerizing waterfall dropping into a vivid sapphire-blue pool. Continue your drive to Shnongpdeng, a lesser-known, pristine alternative to Dawki, situated on the banks of the Umngot River. Check into your premium riverside eco-hut or luxury tent. Day 3: Shnongpdeng to Mawlyngbnaclose

Walk through forests teeming with rare carnivorous Pitcher Plants. Day 4: Mawlyngbna to Mawphanlurclose

Day 6: Shillong to Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuaryclose

Drive to Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary, an incredible, offbeat alternative to Kaziranga that boasts the highest density of the Indian one-horned rhinoceros in the world. In the late afternoon, embark on a thrilling open-jeep safari through the tall elephant grass and wetlands, tracking rhinos, wild water buffalo, and a spectacular variety of migratory birds.

Day 7: Mayong & Chandubi Lakeclose

After breakfast, take a short drive to Mayong, a village historically shrouded in mystery and renowned across India as the ancient capital of black magic and sorcery. Visit the fascinating Mayong Central Museum to view ancient artifacts and manuscripts on witchcraft. Later, drive towards the Garo Hills border to reach Chandubi Lake, a massive, serene waterbody formed during the 1897 earthquake, surrounded by deep forests and tea gardens. Day 8: Chandubi to Shillong/Guwahati Departureclose

Description:
Pack a highly functional, adaptable wardrobe for changing terrains and climates. Bring warm sweaters and a windproof jacket for the highland villages (Kongthong, Mawphanlur, Laitlum), where evenings are chilly year-round, and breathable cottons for the humid Assamese plains (Pobitora, Chandubi). A high-quality raincoat or poncho is an absolute necessity in Meghalaya. Sturdy, waterproof trekking or trail shoes with excellent grip are mandatory for exploring riverbeds, waterfalls, and fossil trails. Bring essential sun protection, a basic first-aid kit, and strong mosquito/insect repellent (critical for Shnongpdeng and Pobitora). The local currency is the Indian Rupee (INR); carrying a substantial amount of cash is absolutely critical, as ATMs and digital payment networks (UPI/Cards) are virtually non-existent in the offbeat villages of Meghalaya and rural Assam.
