Itinerary

This perfectly balanced 6-day itinerary maximizes your time in the Dooars while keeping travel stress to a minimum. The journey begins with a classic overnight train ride from Sealdah. Upon arriving in the foothills, you transfer to Lataguri, dedicating your first afternoon to settling in and enjoying a wildlife safari. The subsequent days are devoted to exploring the stunning offbeat hamlets surrounding Gorumara—crossing the hanging bridge at Suntalekhola and witnessing the massive Jaldhaka Hydel Project at the Bhutan border. The tour concludes with a final scenic morning in the tea gardens before boarding your overnight return train back to Kolkata.

Begin your Dooars adventure by boarding your designated overnight train (such as the Kanchankanya Express or Padatik Express) from Sealdah Railway Station in the evening. Settle into your berths and enjoy the rhythmic overnight journey, leaving the bustling city of Kolkata behind as you travel north toward the verdant foothills of the Eastern Himalayas.

Day 2: Arrival at New Mal Jn/NJP & Transfer to Lataguriclose

Welcome to the Dooars and Gorumara Safari

Wildlife Nature

Arrive at New Mal Junction or New Jalpaiguri (NJP) Railway Station in the morning. An Outlander representative will receive you and transfer you to your resort in Lataguri or Murti, the primary gateway to Gorumara National Park. Check in, freshen up, and enjoy a traditional, homely Bengali lunch. In the late afternoon, head out for a thrilling Jeep Safari in Gorumara (tickets to be booked directly at the counter). Track wild elephants, bison, deer, and the one-horned rhino from the Jatraprasad or Medla watchtowers. Return to the resort for dinner and a peaceful overnight stay.

Day 3: Excursion to Samsing, Suntalekhola & Rocky Islandclose

After a hearty breakfast, embark on a full-day excursion to the picturesque highland hamlets of the Dooars. Drive through miles of undulating, emerald-green tea gardens to reach Samsing, renowned for its cool breeze and orange orchards. Continue to Suntalekhola to experience a thrilling walk across the suspension footbridge hanging over a crystal-clear mountain stream. Finally, visit Rocky Island, where the Murti River flows fiercely over massive riverbed boulders. Return to your Lataguri resort in the late afternoon for evening tea and dinner.

Day 4: Excursion to Jhalong, Bindu & Murticlose

Start your day with breakfast before driving towards the Indo-Bhutan border. The route takes you through the dense Chapramari forest. Visit Jhalong, situated on the banks of the Jaldhaka River, offering spectacular valley views. Proceed to Bindu, the last village on the Indian side, and witness the impressive Jaldhaka Hydel Project. This area is a haven for rare hill birds and migratory species. On your way back, spend some tranquil time on the pebble-strewn banks of the Murti River before returning to the resort for your final night in the Dooars.

Day 5: Lataguri to NJP/New Mal Jn & Return Trainclose

Transfer Travel

Wake up to a final tranquil morning in the forest. Enjoy a relaxed breakfast and perhaps take a short nature walk around the resort or pick up some local Dooars tea from the Lataguri market. After checking out of the hotel by late morning/noon, our driver will transfer you back to New Mal Junction or NJP Railway Station. Board your overnight train back to Sealdah, carrying sweet memories of the pristine wilderness.

Day 6: Arrival at Sealdahclose

Essential trip

information!

Pack comfortably for a tropical and forested environment: lightweight, breathable cotton clothing in earthy, neutral tones (olive green, brown, khaki) is strictly recommended to blend into the jungle environment during safaris and avoid startling wildlife. Bring a light jacket or windcheater, as early morning safaris and evenings near the rivers can be breezy, especially between November and February. Comfortable walking shoes or sturdy sandals are essential for walking across riverbeds in Murti and navigating the steps of the Suntalekhola bridge. Bring binoculars for enhanced wildlife viewing from the watchtowers, essential sun protection, and strong mosquito repellent. The local currency is the Indian Rupee (INR); while some resorts accept digital payments, carrying sufficient cash is highly recommended to pay for safari tickets, guide fees, and local market purchases in Lataguri.
